Jackets sweep Pacers

The Mount Vernon High School boys volleybal team rolled in its first Ohio Capital Conference home game this season, dismantling the Delaware Pacers, 25-11, 25-10, 25-11, on Thursday night.

“It was real nice to get a win,” said Mount Vernon coach Alan Cassell. “I thought we played pretty well today. I got to put a lot of kids in. I got to play some youmger ones.”

The Pacers, who came in to the contest with a 4-1 record, could put nothing together all evening against the Yellow Jackets (4-1).

Big Walnut out to maintain OCC supremacy

When it comes to league play, Jeff Hatfield's bunch has breathed new life into the "finders keepers, losers weepers" idiom.

Since 2008, the Big Walnut softball team has taken ownership of the OCC Capital Division. In 2010, it's harboring no intentions of relinquishing those rights.

"We've been fortunate enough to win it two years in a row and we don't want to give it back," said Hatfield, who's entering his fourth season as the Golden Eagles' coach and whose 54 wins in that span easily offset his 25 losses.

Golden Eagle boys eye OCC Capital crown in 2010

The Golden Eagles’ boys track team has one goal going into the 2010 season — win the Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division championship and go deep into the postseason.

Third-year head coach Eric Myers, who has a two-year record of 122-20, returns 21 letter men from last season’s squad which produced a 70-3 record which include an OCC Capital Division title, a Division I Central District championship, a third-place finish in the Division I Regionals and qualified five athletes to the OHSAA State Track Meet.

Experienced Central team taking the softball field

Only graduating three players from a team is generally a good thing.

Only graduating three players from a team that won a Division I district championship is an even better thing. This is the case for the Pickerington Central softball team, who bowed out to Hilliard Darby 2-0 in last year's regional semifinals.

Last season, the Tigers posted a 24-7 record, finishing third in the Ohio Capital Conference Ohio Division behind Grove City and Gahanna at 9-5.

Gahanna's girls top the Wildcat Premier

Contending with sometimes ferocious winds throughout the day, the Gahanna girls team and the Medina boys squad took top honors in the annual Wildcat Premier track and field meet at Hilliard Davidson Saturday, April 3.

Gahanna's girls scored 97 points to beat runner-up Pickerington Central (88). And Medina's boys tallied 129.5 points to outdistance Pickerington North (101.5).

In all, 18 teams were on hand. Twenty-one events were scored.

Tennis Eagles look prepared to claw back to the top

After a No. 1 state ranking, a fourth straight Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division title, and an anticlimactic season-ending Ohio Tennis Coaches Association district loss to Upper Arlington in 2009, the New Albany boys tennis team is rebounding with plans to win one match at a time again this season.

Freshmen add spark to Hayes program

The Delaware Hayes High School boys club lacrosse team hopes its second season will be an improvement from last year.

It appears it could be, as the Pacers beat Big Walnut 9-7 in the opener March 24 to match last year's win total. Delaware was 1-11 a year ago, with the win coming via a forfeit after losing to Watterson 13-0 on the field.

There are quite a few changes this season. Dick Sanfillipo replaced former coach Tom Favorito, who left to coach at Olentangy Orange. Assistant Tony Nieto went with him.
